How We Got Our Start
Food is a common platform that defies boundaries and races. It nourishes and brings people together like no other commodity in the world.
Some 5 years ago, Singapore Tourism Board started to promote food tours as a niche market. It was relatively unknown area and it was not even taught in training schools. Today, there are approximately average of 5 food tours everyday. This is due partly to the changing needs of tourist and to the extraordinary efforts of STB. 93% of all travellers in the world manifest food as a consideration when they travel to their destination. Food diplomacy brought President Trump and Kim Jung Un to the same table in Singapore. Food travellers want something authentic, eclectic and adventurous. It could be a neighbourhood coffees-shop that sells outstanding heritage cuisine or an unknown new hybrid cuisine in the making. Through food, one recognises the history, culture and the people that makes the country so unique. These are some of the findings of the World Food Travel Association(WFTA), the oldest and largest food tourism organization in the world.
This PDC is accredited to WFTA and upon successful completion of this course allows the guide to be better prepared for food travellers from around the world. Their names will be reflected in the WFTA website for travellers to refer to when they come to Singapore. They would be taught how to profile the guests, attend to their needs, managed their expectations.
This course not only addresses international food traveilers concerns but also local ones which the guide is trained in basic food tour guiding.
With this course, it would also create a benchmark in which standards can be created in preparation for our UNESCO nomination bid for intangible hawker culture. Presently, there are no known recognised courses available in Singapore that teaches this.
